FMS representative attended and spoke at UN event

The special session of the UN General Assembly on challenges and measures to prevent and combat corruption and strengthen international cooperation was held from 2 to 4 June 2021, and a political declaration was adopted following the session, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told.

A side event entitled “Misuse of Non-profit Organizations for corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing (ML/FT) was held at the initiative of the Republic of Azerbaijan within the session on June 4.

The event addressed such issues as the important role of non-profit organizations and charitable foundations in ensuring sustainable development, as well as corruption, ML / FT risks in the activities of these institutions, development of special rules to prevent misuse of charitable funds, use of virtual currencies and an uncontrolled segment of the Internet by charitable organizations to finance criminal acts, using banks and other financial institutions as intermediaries for such activities followed by interactive discussions.

Speaking at the event, the representative of the FMS noted that during the 44-day war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenian diaspora organizations operating abroad raised $ 170 million, of which $ 110 million was illegally transferred to the Armenian budget. He said that this fact was acknowledged by high-ranking Armenian officials, including the Prime Minister, and that the money, which was fraudulently collected from citizens of different countries under the guise of humanitarian aid and transferred to the Armenian state budget, was used to provide illegal armed groups previously deployed in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan with weapons.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Missions of UN member states, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the University of Liverpool, the European Center for Non-profit Law, the FMS and NGOs.
